Virtual Orderbooks: A solution to build and deploy custom trading venues on the Canton Network

Temple's robust trading engine is now available to select institutions interested in building on Canton.
What are Virtual Orderbooks?
A Virtual Orderbook is a private instance of the Temple Lightspeed trading environment. It is a primitive that allows for the creation of spot, prediction, and perpetual markets. With Virtual Orderbooks, Temple opens up its proprietary trading engine to institutions interested in building platforms compatible with Canton network infrastructure and emerging tokenization standards.
The venue deployer configures an exchange's economics, access controls, and compliance rules while Temple operates the underlying infrastructure.
Each venue is:
- Sovereign. The deployer owns venue configuration, data, and policy. Temple infrastructure provides the platform but does not see the venue operator's information.
- Private by default. Order flow, balances, and participant identities stay within the venue’s permissioned set. Canton’s privacy model is applied to any actions taken on the platform.
- Embedded Compliant Controls . Operator-defined KYC, jurisdictional and eligibility rules are enforced at order submission and at match.
- High performance. Sub-10ms matching with price-time priority and MEV resistance.
- Connectivity. Native atomic onchain settlement with any DAML application on Canton.
Virtual Orderbooks are the first item within Temple’s upcoming Market Development Framework. Each Market Development Framework item sits within a Temple Improvement Proposal. Virtual Orderbooks are marked internally as TIP-1. Additional TIPs will follow.
Why Build on Temple
There are many reasons why an institution may decide to build a Canton native trading venue using Temple’s upcoming Market Development Framework:
- Performance: Levearge proprietary R&D specific to scaling trading solutions on Canton Network.
- Connectivity. Any solution developed is interoperable with the rest of the Canton Network, its applications, and liquidity.
- Speed to market. Days, not months, to launch a fully operational and compliant trading platform.
- Distribution. Access to a shared and growing body of assets and partners building on the Market Development Framework and TIP system.
Venue operators are responsible for their own licensing, regulatory perimeter and client onboarding. Temple provides the underlying technology.
